Butterfly Snacks wins Food Northwest Award

Do you have some fantastic homemade gluten free products and an entrepreneurial streak?

When Sana Malik was diagnosed as a coeliac, her family rallied round, developed a range of gluten free snacks for her, and are now selling these snacks to coeliacs across the northwest of the UK. What is more, they’ve just won an award for the Most Innovative Product at the Food Northwest Awards.

These snacks include samosas and spring rolls, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and available through the East Lancashire Coeliac Society, as well as in various shops in the area. Butterfly Snacks are now in talks with food chains and the NHS. The NHS! Perhaps Butterfly Snacks will be available for coeliacs needing hospital meals?

Huge congratulations to the Malik family and the new Butterfly Snacks business.

Gluten Free Fruit Cake: Missing at Starbucks

I called in this morning at the Starbucks in the Sainsbury’s near us – daughter 2 had been to the orthodontist, and needed something sweet and sticky (yes, I know, not exactly ideal), and whenever we go there we try and pick up a piece of their gluten free fruit cake for daughter 1 (the coeliac).

They no longer stock the gluten free fruit cake!

Anywhere – unilateral Starbucks decision.

I suppose that they thought sales were falling, but if they’d kept the stock levels up, they’d have sold more, as often we would find that they’d sold out before we got there. And obviously, because our options are limited we can’t choose something else instead. Lost sales opportunity, Starbucks.

Daughter 1 is going to be so disappointed. This was the best gluten free fruit cake we’d found (apart from my own homemade fruit cake made using vodka and cranberries, obviously) – and we’ve tried a lot – certainly the best cake available commercially, and was the only reason that we would visit Starbucks in preference to any other coffee house.

They’ve replaced it with something called ‘Summer Orange Cake’, and I was so disappointed for my daughter that I couldn’t bring myself to buy it.

I’m really hoping that this is just a summer aberration, and that normal service will be resumed shortly. They’re still listing the GF fruit cake on their website …

Allergy Alert: gluten contamination

The Food Standards Agency last night issued a warning about Sainsbury’s Be Good To Yourself Chicken Tikka Masala with Pilau Rice (it’s in the freezer).

There’s been a packaging error, and this contains egg, gluten (from wheat and from barley) and soya.

Ignore what it says on the label, and don’t eat it!

Gluten Free: Sally’s Sizzling Sausages

Surprise! We came home to find a variety pack of burgers from Sally’s Sizzling Sausages on the doorstep – and not just any old burger, but all gluten free and a whole variety of flavours.

Sally’s Sizzling Sausages don’t just do sausages, obviously – they also do these burgers, meatballs, kebabs, bacon, fish and chicken. According to their site, they are working on a vegetarian gluten free sausage … now that really will be a find, as these are very difficult to track down.

I’ll let you know what we make of the taster pack we received, after our holiday …

Free gluten free recipes at Glutenfreeda

I’ve just read (at Gluten Free Fun that the online magazine Glutenfreeda is now free – thanks for the tip-off, Erin!

This is good news. I was previously aware of the magazine, but was just too mean to subscribe, so the fact that it is now free, and contains apparently the world’s largest collection of GF recipes, is great. I notice that there are also articles to read, product reviews and cookery lessons. I’m looking forward to working on doughnuts, as I haven’t mastered these yet.

I suppose they have changed their strategy on how best to monetize the site, and have decided to go with adverts rather than subscriptions … only good news for us, so I hope it works out for them too.
