{"id":149,"date":"2007-05-16T19:35:10","date_gmt":"2007-05-16T18:35:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/?p=149"},"modified":"2007-05-16T19:35:10","modified_gmt":"2007-05-16T18:35:10","slug":"coeliac-awareness-week-2007-why-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/coeliac-awareness-week-2007-why-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Coeliac Awareness Week 2007: Why me?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So &#8211; you&#8217;ve just been told you should cut out gluten from your diet, probably because you have celiac disease, though there are other reasons for going gluten free.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re probably going through one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>disbelief &#8211; this can&#8217;t be true<\/li>\n<li>denial &#8211; this isn&#8217;t true<\/li>\n<li>depression &#8211; it is true, and I can&#8217;t bear it<\/li>\n<li>reconciliation &#8211; it is true and I can cope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are often described as the four phases of bereavement, and it isn&#8217;t too far removed from the way people react to the diagnosis of a lifetime condition.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re asking &#8216;Why Me?&#8217;, the answer is probably that you have the &#8216;right&#8217; genetic makeup for coeliac disease, you have been consuming gluten regularly in your diet, and possibly that you have also experienced one of the following &#8216;triggers&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stress (due to exams, a car crash, moving abroad &#8230;)<\/li>\n<li>pregnancy (this can be pretty stressful too!)<\/li>\n<li>surgery (not exactly stress-free)<\/li>\n<li>change in nutritional status (gaining or losing a lot of weight quickly)<\/li>\n<li>food poisoning or a stomach bug.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>What about the genetic factor: is there someone else in your family with CD?<\/p>\n<p>If you have it, it is quite likely that other members of your family may have an increased risk of CD:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An identical twin has about 70% chance of also having CD<\/li>\n<li>\nA brother or sister with the same tissue type has about 30-40% chance<\/li>\n<li>\nA brother or sister who doesn\u2019t have the same tissue type \u2013 about 10%<\/li>\n<li>\nA child \u2013 about 10%<\/li>\n<li>A parent \u2013 5-7%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve been diagnosed, then you should ask for your nearest relatives to be tested too &#8211; just in case.<\/p>\n<p>I know this doesn&#8217;t help, if you&#8217;ve not yet reached phase 4 (reconciliation), but this diagnosis isn&#8217;t necessarily a short straw &#8211; the gluten free diet, which will probably mean that you have to cook more food from scratch and eat more fruit, vegetables, plain meat and fish, is a very healthy one.<\/p>\n<p>There are support groups around who will understand how you feel.  In the UK, I suggest joining <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coeliac.org.uk\">Coeliac UK<\/a> and attending the local meetings &#8211; and visiting the <a href=\"http:\/\/members2.boardhost.com\/glutenfree\">messageboard<\/a> (this is not a CUK board, but is run by volunteers).<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps someone from other countries could suggest a good source of local support &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><!--adsense--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So &#8211; you&#8217;ve just been told you should cut out gluten from your diet, probably because you have celiac disease, though there are other reasons for going gluten free.
