{"id":2979,"date":"2015-05-22T10:20:47","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T09:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/?p=2979"},"modified":"2017-05-20T11:35:24","modified_gmt":"2017-05-20T10:35:24","slug":"gluten-free-breakfasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/gluten-free-breakfasts\/","title":{"rendered":"Gluten Free Breakfasts: Cornflakes and Pains au Chocolat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gluten free breakfast is something we\u2019ve struggled with over the last couple of decades \u2013 but not at the moment!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/student-starter-pack\/\">mentioned them before<\/a> but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nestlecereals.co.uk\/content\/Brands\/BrandRange.aspx?BrandRangeId=30\">Nestl\u00e9\u2019s gluten free honey cornflakes<\/a> are proving to be a huge success for us. Coeliac daughter (a student living away from home these days) says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cthey changed my breakfasts \u2013 I have good breakfasts now\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I did challenge what she meant by \u2018good\u2019 (Yummy? Healthy? Big?) and she said<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cyummy, mostly healthy, and something that will keep me going\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/crispie-cakes.jpg\" alt=\"crispie-cakes\" width=\"300\" height=\"534\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/crispie-cakes.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/crispie-cakes-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>She has the honey cornflakes every day for breakfast with milk, orange juice and a banana. <\/p>\n<p>She also has cornflakes again in the evening as a snack&#8230;which does explain why every time she comes home, or we visit her, we strip the shelves in our local supermarket of boxes of the honey cornflakes, as she hasn\u2019t found anywhere local to her that stocks them.  She must be going through a couple of boxes a week&#8230; And no, I&#8217;m not worried about her not eating properly, as I know that she cooks a proper meal in the evenings as well!<\/p>\n<p>She also really likes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geniusglutenfree.com\/en_GB\/p\/PainsauChocolat170g\">Genius Pains au Chocolat<\/a>, which I buy as a special treat for her occasionally: they\u2019ve been very hard to find, and are a bit expensive for a student budget. <\/p>\n<p>The are delicious, though, and truly remarkable \u2013 it really isn\u2019t easy to make that kind of pastry, and these are not only gluten free, but also dairy free. No wonder they won the breakfast category, and were runners up in the innovation category of the Free From Foods Awards this year. (We had no idea they were dairy free until then.)<\/p>\n<p>I wish that both these products were more easily available \u2013 both easier to find in store, and available in more shops across the country:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The honey cornflakes are not shelved with the other gluten free products, and nor are they shelved with other cornflakes (oddly) though the plain ones are. I\u2019ve looked in various Tesco shops and in Sainsburys. It is necessary to play \u2018hunt the honey boxes\u2019 a bit, but they are worth looking for<\/li>\n<li>And the pains au chocolat are obviously so popular that the shops that do stock them can\u2019t keep them on the shelves. So if you see them, grab them! (Unless you live near us, obviously, in which case please leave them there for us to pick up(!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The crispie cakes you see in the picture above were made in coeliac daughter\u2019s student flat from Nestl\u00e9&#8217;s plain gluten free cornflakes. Pretty, aren&#8217;t they? She loves to bake, and her cakes get snaffled very quickly by her flatmates \u2013 yes, even though they are gluten free!<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\n(Both Nestle and Genius sent us samples to try, but we are regular buyers of these products anyway, so our comments aren\u2019t biased by receiving the samples)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gluten free breakfast is something we\u2019ve struggled with over the last couple of decades \u2013 but not at the moment!
