{"id":309,"date":"2007-10-12T12:17:31","date_gmt":"2007-10-12T11:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/?p=309"},"modified":"2017-05-20T12:21:11","modified_gmt":"2017-05-20T11:21:11","slug":"independent-gets-it-wrong-again-spelt-is-not-gluten-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/independent-gets-it-wrong-again-spelt-is-not-gluten-free\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent gets it wrong again: spelt is not gluten free"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You might remember that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.free-from.com\/blog\/?p=287\">I quoted the Independent<\/a> in September as saying that spelt was acceptable for a gluten free diet, and that I emailed them (twice) to remind them that it wasn&#8217;t &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coeliac.org.uk\/exg\/816.asp?EmMailerKeywords=exg&#038;dm_i=160725968\">October newsletter<\/a>, which came out on 1 October, Coeliac UK also contacted them to complain.  They&#8217;ve received an apology from the author, but no public retraction yet.  (I haven&#8217;t received any response, of course).<\/p>\n<p>But on the 9th October, the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.independent.co.uk\/business\/sme\/article3041661.ece\">Independent did it again<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For those with a wheat intolerance, Bacheldre Watermill&#8217;s spelt flour is traditionally made from a Roman grain and is gluten free.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I notice, though, that the couple at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bacheldremill.co.uk\">Bacheldre Watermill<\/a> who produce this spelt flour do &#8211; correctly &#8211; tell us on their website that it contains gluten.  Thank you Matt and Anne!<\/p>\n<p>Do you get the impression that the Independent just doesn&#8217;t care?  Or perhaps there is a fundamental failure to communicate within the organisation when a mistake is made.
