Gluten free in Spain

We’ve booked a holiday in Spain, and so have the usual holiday dilemma ‘do we or don’t we pack GF?’

We opted out of in-flight meals, and we’ll take a picnic of sorts for the plane. When we get there, we’re self-catering, so we’ll be able to pick and choose the food to buy. The supplementary board tells me that we’ll be able to get Proceli, Bi-Aglut and Schaer products – and some others – from a variety of supermarkets.

But of course, when catering for children, they do like to have things that they know and trust – and trust is a key element in managing the diet. You do need to be able to trust your food not to damage you. So I expect I’ll pack the usual – some Juvela rolls, a pizza base or two, and some pasta.

We’ll report back. In the meantime:

I have an illness called coeliac disease and have to follow a strict gluten-free diet.
Tengo una enfermedad que se llama celiaca y necesito sequir una dieta rigurosa libre de gluten.

I can eat food containing rice, maize, potatoes, all kinds of vegetables and fruit, eggs, cheese, milk, meat and fish – as long as they are not cooked with wheat flour, batter, breadcrumbs or sauce.
Puede comer alimentos que contienen arroz, maiz, patatas, todo tipo de verdure y fruta, huevos, queso, leche, carne y pescado – siempre que no hayan sido preparados con harina de trigo, rebozo, pan rayado o con salsas.

Thank you for your help.
Muchas gracias por su ayuda.

I’ve written a book summarising what we’ve learnt over 20 years of dealing with the gluten free diet, and it might be just what you’re looking for. It packs the lessons we’ve learned into what I hope is a helpful and straightforward guidebook. It’s available on Amazon, as a paperback or for your Kindle…
