Sainsbury’s CSR strategy and Coeliac Disease

Delighted to read on Sainsbury’s corporate site today that they say:

We commit to… Being the number one choice for customers with allergies or intolerances

and that their new targets are:

  • We will maintain our competitive range and pricing on ‘freefrom’
  • We will provide a comprehensive list of ‘suitable for’ products for customers with special dietary needs, by June 2008

I believe them – I’m already switching back to Sainsbury’s for our gluten free shopping just because they provide the widest range of free-from products all the major supermarkets. And, as I’ve said before, supply the needs of one family member with a special diet, and you get the custom of the whole family.

How about it, Tesco, Waitrose, Asda, Aldi, Morrison’s, Somerfield etc? Planning to compete?

I’ve written a book summarising what we’ve learnt over 20 years of dealing with the gluten free diet, and it might be just what you’re looking for. It packs the lessons we’ve learned into what I hope is a helpful and straightforward guidebook. It’s available on Amazon, as a paperback or for your Kindle…

Sainsbury’s certainly in Leicester, does not seem to have their chicken nuggets anymore in the “free from” range
Where can I buy decent chicken nuggets for my two boys ?

Hmm, I wonder if that’s a permanent thing, or if its just them ‘making space for Christmas’ – as we all know, the shelving space available for Free From foods gets less at Christmas. Either way, its frustrating if you’ve found something your coeliac child likes, and then it disappears.

You could try Tesco, who were also doing free from chicken nuggets, or you could try making your own (instructions for gluten free chicken nuggets). It’s possible that other supermarkets are doing them, but I don’t know of any – does anyone else?

Many of the Supermarkets say that they committed to… but the product choice offered to consumers with allergies or intolerances are still very limited…

Consumer must be more active and place requests with their local supermarket to make available some of the great new product, so the products you want can be purchase with the weekly shopping.

Most retailers are more than glad to stock a new product specially when requested by a regular customer.

Hi Bella – any plans on getting your own products into supermarkets? I’d certainly like to be able to pick them up easily … (for those who don’t know, Brazilian Flavours have a range of delicious products – the pizza mix and cheesebread mix are very good).
